Instructor Announcement: Laney Barhaugh

By Benjy | January 12, 2018

We are proud to announce that Laney Barhaugh will be joining us in Atlanta for Brickyard Blues! Laney joins [Damon Stone] and [Kenneth Shipp] as a featured instructor for Brickyard’s weekend of blues dance classes and blues dancing.

Like a superhero with dual identities, Laney is a skilled blues dance instructor by day and an inspiring blues DJ by night. She will be taking control of the dance floor at the appropriate time.

Laney the Instructor

Laney is a blues dance instructor, organizer, and DJ. She has been dancing Lindy Hop and blues for over 10 years, with some dabbling in tango and hip hop. She also loves lifting heavy things – it has given her confidence, better quality of movement, and has completely changed her dancing. She loves shaking her booty to any genre of music that encourages it. As a teacher, her goals are to integrate a little history and a little musicality into every lesson.

Laney’s Awards

  • 1st place – Open JnJ at bluesSHOUT! 2015, JnJ at Blues Muse 2015, Strictly at Winter Blues 2014

  • Finals – JnJ & solo comp at Enter the Blues, Jill & JnJ at Blues Muse, JnJ at Winter Blues, Solo Comp at Nocturne Blues 2014

Laney the DJ

As is often the case in small scenes, Laney started DJing out of necessity – somebody had to play some music! Since then, she has come to greatly enjoy the process of acquiring, vetting, and playing music for blues dancers. She loves playing a wide variety of styles, from sweet jazz-blues to gritty juke joint tunes to soul-influenced ballads, and she has a soft spot for any song that brings the party. She has DJed extensively in her home scene of Minneapolis, as well as at Steel City Blues, Sweet Molasses Blues, Red Hot BBQ & Blues, CUBE, Nocturne Blues & Sweet Molasses Blues.
